Brilliant Green Agar (Kristensen)
Brilliant Green Agar of Kristensen is a highly selective medium used to isolate salmonella, except for Salmonella Typhi, in biological samples of animal origin and food products.
The agar can also be used as the second media of choice in the normalized standards for the research and detection of Salmonella.
Available in dehydrated medium bottles of 500g.
In compliance with regulatory requirements, a USDA permit (VS 16-3) is mandatory for shipments from Canada to the USA due to the inclusion of peptone, an animal byproduct.
Inhibition of Gram-positive flora and most Gram-negative germs is due to the presence of brilliant green.
The medium contains two carbohydrates, lactose and sucrose, for which fermentation of either or both results in a lowering of pH, leading to the appearance of yellow-green colonies in the presence of the pH indicator the pH indicator, phenol red. Salmonella produces colorless to pinkish colonies.
It is particularly recommended to subculture enrichment broths simultaneously on other, less selective media, such as gels.
such as MacConkey agar, XLD agar or Hektöen agar.
Thanks to its high inhibitory power, this medium can be used for highly contaminated inoculum.
