Campy Blood-Free Selective Medium
Campy-Blood Free Selective Medium with the addition of an antibiotic supplement is used for the selective isolation of Campylobacter jejuni, C. coli, and C. lari from food.
In compliance with regulatory requirements, a USDA permit (VS 16-3) is mandatory for shipments from Canada to the USA due to the inclusion of peptone, an animal byproduct.
Campy Blood-Free Selective Medium is a medium used in combination with antibiotics for the detection, isolation and quantification of Campylobacter jejuni, C. coli and C. lari in foods. In this medium, based on the original formulation by Bolton et al. (1984), blood is replaced by a mixture of Bacteriological Charcoal, Ferrous Sulfate, Sodium Pyruvate and Casein Peptone.
Charcoal detoxifies and reduces oxygen tension. Ferrous Sulfate and Sodium Pyruvate enhance the growth and aerotolerance of Campylobacter bacteria. Casein Peptone, together with Gelatin and Beef Extract, provides nutritional compounds such as amino acids, peptides, carbohydrates and vitamins to the bacteria. Sodium Chloride serves as source of essential electrolytes and maintains osmotic equilibrium.
The addition of the selective agents Cefoperazone and Sodium Desoxycholate makes the medium selective for Campylobacter.
