Cystine Tryptone Agar
Cystine Tryptone Agar is a solid medium recommended for the maintenance, subculture, motility detection, and detection of fermentation reactions of fastidious microorganisms. Motility can be detected in semisolid Agar, since motile cultures grow away from the line of inoculation, while non-motile organisms grow along the stab line.
Addition of carbohydrates allows its use to study fermentation reactions through color shift of the pH indicator Phenol Red. Casein Enzymatic Hydrolysate and L-Cystine provide essential nutrients for bacterial growth. Sodium Chloride maintains the osmotic balance. Agar is the gelifying agent.
In compliance with regulatory requirements, a USDA permit (VS 16-3) is mandatory for shipments from Canada to the USA due to the inclusion of peptone, an animal byproduct.
Cystine Trypto Agar is a semi-solid medium used for the cultivation, maintenance, motility determination, and fermentation reactions of bacteria. It was formulated by Vera it has often been used for the cultivation of various fastidious microorganisms, such as Neisseria, Streptococcus, Pastuerella, Brucella, Corynebacterium, and Vibrio.
Anaerobes are capable of growth in this media without the addition of anaerobic conditions. Mycoplasma could be cultivated with the addition of 5% yeast extract and rabbit serum.
