Fluid Thioglycollate Medium
Fluid Thioglycollate Medium is used for determining the presence of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria in normally sterile materials. Pancreatic Digest of Casein is the nitrogenous source. Yeast Extract supplies B-complex vitamins. Dextrose is the fermentable carbohydrate.
L-Cystine and Sodium Thioglycollate allow Clostridium spp. to grow in this medium even under aerobic conditions. The latter also neutralizes the toxic effect of mercurial preservatives and peroxides.
Resazurin indicates increases in the oxygen content by shifting to pink-red. The small amount of Agar maintains a low redox potential to stabilize the medium.
In compliance with regulatory requirements, a USDA permit (VS 16-3) is mandatory for shipments from Canada to the USA due to the inclusion of peptone, an animal byproduct.
Fluid Thioglycollate Culture Media is used for determining the presence of bacteria in normally sterile materials. This medium conforms to the formula specified by USP an AOAC. Fluid Thioglycollate Medium was designed by Brewer for rapid cultivation of anaerobes and aerobes and is capable of supporting growth of a great variety of fastidious organisms.
Sodium thioglycollate lowers the oxidation-reduction potential of the media as well as neutralizes the antibacterial activity of mercurial compounds. Resazurin indicates the status of oxidation. The small amount of agar stabilizes the medium against convention currents, which maintains anaerobiosis in the lower depths of the tube. Dextrose is added as a carbohydrate source.
