Motility Test Medium
Motility Test Medium is used for differentiating microorganisms based on their motility due to the presence of low Agar concentrations. Motile bacteria will diffuse from the line of inoculation, while non-motile organisms will only grow along this area.
Enzymatic Digests of Gelatin and Beef Extract provide the main nutrients essential to bacterial growth: amino acids, peptides, carbohydrates, vitamins, and electrolytes. Sodium Chloride maintains osmotic balance.
In compliance with regulatory requirements, a USDA permit (VS 16-3) is mandatory for shipments from Canada to the USA due to the inclusion of peptone, an animal byproduct.
Motility Test Medium is a modification of the original agar formula used to detect bacterial motility. The medium is inoculated by stabbing though the center of the prepared medium.
Motility is observed macroscopically by observing growth radiating from the original stab. Certain strains demonstrate motility by diffusing throughout the medium while others only show a small amount of diffusion along the lateral line of inoculation.
Temperature of incubation can also be a factor in demonstrating motility as certain bacteria such as Yersinia enterocolitica show better motility at 25.0°C.
