Phenol Red Lactose Broth
Phenol Red Lactose Broth is used for the determination of Lactose fermentation by pure cultures of microorganisms. Microorganisms that ferment Lactose will produce acid and change the Phenol Red indicator to yellow.
Also, the use of Durham tubes will allow for gas production detection.
In compliance with regulatory requirements, a USDA permit (VS 16-3) is mandatory for shipments from Canada to the USA due to the inclusion of peptone, an animal byproduct.
Phenol Red Lactose Broth is a liquid medium recommended to differentiate microorganisms based on their ability to ferment the carbohydrate Lactose.
Enzymatic Digest of Casein provides additional nutrients (nitrogen and carbon) to the microorganisms, while Sodium Chloride serves as source of essential electrolytes and maintains the osmotic equilibrium.
The pH indicator Phenol Red shifts from red to yellow upon accumulation of acidic metabolic byproducts, thus revealing Lactose fermentation.
